Changing Lives Through Independence

Two youth took the initiative to start a peer cooking group, creating a welcoming space where young people with disabilities can build friendships, develop independent living skills, gain confidence in the kitchen, and learn from one another in a fun and supportive environment.

One senior who had lost much of her vision and hearing was isolated at home. Through assistive technology, mobility training, and community partnerships, she learned to travel independently, use public transportation, access essential services, and participate in adaptive recreation. She has built meaningful friendships, advocates for accessibility in her community, and is preparing to receive a guide dog—transforming her life from isolation to independence.

We have a peer group for high school youth so we could get together, go out into the community, and try new things. It's given us the chance to make new friends, have fun, build confidence, and become more independent while supporting each other along the way.

Another senior recovered from a hip replacement after a serious fall with the help of creative home accessibility solutions, rehabilitation services, transportation, and community supports. Today, she has completed therapy and is thriving in her home.

Our Life Skills Camp gives youth with disabilities the opportunity to learn and practice skills that help them become more independent in their everyday lives. One of the best parts is seeing youth come back each year to mentor new participants. Returning campers encourage others, share their experiences, and provide peer support, showing what's possible through confidence, independence, and helping each other succeed.

We also supported an 83-year-old woman after a broken knee by coordinating in-home therapy, connecting her with community-based services, and providing ongoing peer support and advocacy. We continue working closely with her and her family to ensure she can safely remain at home with the supports she needs. |
